John grew up in the deep woods of northern Minnesota and began writing songs in his adolescence. His father was a multi-instrumentalist and local musician whose band, The Northern Notes, played Traditional Country, Western Swing and Scandinavian folks songs. As a child, John watched the band rehearse in the family kitchen. His Mother is a literary writer of poetry and short stories. She was one of the few writers to be published nationally, first time out.
With this type of creative upbringing and being the fourth of five children, John was exposed to a wide range of music and written word. 'I was surrounded by expression of every kind...'. 'You learn to see the world and the people you meet through a song.’, he continued.
Throughout the years, John played with a number of bands of many genres and continued to work on his songwriting craft. For a number of years, John put his music on hold to raise a family and build a business. Now that his kids have grown, he moving to Holly Springs, North Carolina, and is again working on his music.
Musically, John roams a lot of ranges from Americana, Folk, Country and Gospel to gritty slide blues. 'All music is good music to me.’ According to John, ‘It just depends on the song. Musically, the song kind of picks what it wants to be’.
Recently he has returned to the stage showcasing his songwriting craftsmanship. This last year, he has shared the stage with Nashville's The Choir, Michael Roe from The 77's and The Lost Dogs. He regularly plays with his friend Pierce Pettis who wrote 'You Move Me' which was featured on Garth Brooks’ multi-platinum selling album ‘Seven’. Lyricist for the band The Choir and Nashville session musician Steve Hindalong, featured John’s song, Runaway Jimmie in his highly celebrated songwriting seminar, Drop a Feather In The River.
In December of 2013, John was awarded 1st Place in the American Songwriter Magazine and Gibson USA lyric competition. 'I was surprised, honored and humbled' Carlson says regarding the win. 'As a musician, you write in your head first, and then to have someone else enjoy your music is really something.’ As part of his 1st Place win, John also received a new Gibson Songwriter Deluxe Studio EC guitar from Gibson USA. He is featured in the January/February 2014 edition of American Songwriter Magazine.
John has recently completed a recording session with Two Egrets Studio in Greensboro, North Carolina to complete his forthcoming album. He worked with Universal and Atlantic Records recording artist, Mike Garrigan who manned the engineering and producing helm. Watch for the new album, ‘Walkin’ in early in 2014.
