Imaginative and fearless pianist and composer, Chihiro Yamanaka began attracting attention while she was still a student at the esteemed Berklee School of Music in Boston. Mainly based in New York City. Yamanaka is a fluent and quick-thinking improviser with a strong touch at the keyboard and a sure rhythmic sense. Her material mixes her own tunes with a couple of standards (albeit oddly treated in one instance) and jazz compositions by Roland Kirk and McCoy Tyner, as well as a side-step into classical sources. She is accompanied by the top drawer US rhythm team of Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, attractions in their own right.

Yamanaka shows her recent influence from European music in an eclectic selection of songs, which range from an European traditional "Quand Biron Volut Danser" and Fritz Kreisler's "Liebesleid" to unique jazz compositions by Roland Kirk ("Serenade to a Cuckoo"), Geri Allen ("RTG") and McCoy Tyner ("Mode to John"). She even plays edgy, distortion-laden electric piano on a couple of tunes. (Eastwind Import)
