Three Wolf Moon is the psychedelic-folk-rock imagining of friends Adam Grant, John Sayer, Tyler Maynard, Max Grant and Evan Joel. Across these eight epic cuts, each of which clocks in at over five minutes, the group steeps its brawny, southern-fried jams in haunting reverb, melding the earthiness of backwoods folk-rock with atmospheric psychedelia and headbanging heaviness. Singer-guitarist Adam Grant-who also plays in Black Wizard-alternates between a rough-around-the-edges drawl and an ascendent, untamed yowl.
“Drone”, which is far more melodic and dynamic than its title would suggest, begins the album with quietly twanging licks before it swells to a tightly orchestrated crescendo of distorted six-string fireworks, harmonized solos, and whirling organ. It’s the kind of sprawling tune that fans of My Morning Jacket’s early work have spent the past decade craving, and the rest of Three Wolf Moon follows in kind, with the ensemble eschewing concise punchiness in favour of extended instrumental passages. No track particularly stands out from the others, and the five-piece never strays too far from its ’70s-indebted comfort zone.

During slow-burning closer “Night Walk”, Grant spends the final moments unleashing a lonesome, skyward-reaching howl. Just in case the rest of the album didn’t bring Three Wolf Moon’s band name to life, this definitely does the trick.
