Often two-piece bands work because their riffs are so punchy and bold that any additional instrumentation wouldn’t be appropriate. Melbourne outfit Evil Twin show once again it’s often simple that’s best.

At their essence, Evil Twin is a bread and butter rock band. By no means is this a bad thing, quite the opposite. I love rock music, however I found myself craving more from Kill The Funk. Evil Twin need to go a bit more mental. They need to ask themselves ‘Why not use 3 fuzz pedals in this section?’ or ‘Why not play this song twice as fast as feels right?’ So much potential can be heard in this release that makes you want them to be more like a club sandwich.

I absolutely expect that with some time and honing, we will see Evil Twin join the ranks of your Jackson Firebird’s, your DZ Deathrays’ and your Death From Above 1979′s. One can hear real promise in tracks such as opener Come and Go and Sticky Fingers, which mark the bar for which Evil Twin must rise above.

It is very unfair to compare Evil Twin to bands such as this though. Bands who have had years and years to perfect their sound. Kill The Funk is the debut album by a young band, and as such, is excellent. This album makes it easy to tell that Evil Twin would be fantastic live. The dirty rock n’ roll guitar and pumping drums would translate well to the stage, destroying the gap in energy in the record.

I am excited to hear more from Evil Twin. Kill The Funk is a good solid release and shows the duo can handle themselves. Lets hope they harness their inner mentals come their next release.
