The most enigmatic band in America releases the prologue to their 7-album continent project, featuring their characteristic world of strange sounds atop irresistible melodies.

“People began dancing more, drumming on their bodies, and yelling...the entire crowd was buzzing with energy.” -The Eastern Echo

Three years in the making, and the culmination of several expansive tours across two continents, the release of The Anatomy of Frank’s debut album Pangaea has been long overdue. The album’s theme is separation, and over the course of its length it fades from upbeat optimism to brooding dissolution. But the group’s overall message is an inspiring one—the band has sold merchandise to Mugison, booked collaboration with the mixing engineer of Sigur Rós, and been declared by Matt Ashare, former head music editor of the Boston Phoenix, to exude “an infectious kind of enthusiasm.”

The theme of separation is woven into Pangaea’s fabric. “We wanted to introduce an album that sounds completely fresh to the ear, and we did so by creating a very novel sonic palette,” says producer Lance Brenner. “This is certainly the most ambitious project I’ve ever worked on.” The five-piece band, who hails from Charlottesville, Virginia, spent three years experimenting with sounds on the album—from guitar tones to spinning skateboard wheels, drills, and tape decks—to create a pop record with a lot of parts to chew on. The songs float between inspired pop melodies, indie rock, and post-rock energy shifts to create a highly dynamic experience.

Pangaea initiates the band’s goal of recording an album for (and on) every continent, introduces their style before they embark on North American and European tours in 2013, and presents both an immediate catchiness and rewarding treasures piled thickly beneath.
