Anyone who knows Sydney based blues-rockers Gay Paris knows two things. A: You know what you’re going to get from a new album and B: You’ve got no idea what’s lurking around each turn.
The Last Good Party is exactly that, an unpredictable roller coaster ride of rock n’ roll rhythm and blues, swampy yet intricate riffage and vocals that at times sound like a body being dragged through gravel.
Album opener Ash Wednesday Boudoir Party sets the tone perfectly, an opening stomp of massive guitars and ferocious vocals that all ends in a riff so damn monstrous that would make Godzilla flee the scene. Throughout the following 9 tracks you’ll get lost in a world of massive guitar, inventive structures and arrangements, throat scraping vocals and the occasional piano led balladry.
This is Gay Paris at the rock n’ roll best, but with a focus, cohesion and confidence that has, at times, been lacking in the past.
These guys are one of Australia’s best kept secrets, especially on the live scene, and if this really is The Last Good Party I’m gonna need someone to fill my cup because I’m here until the sun comes up.
4 empty shot glasses out of 5. (Review written by Leonard K Jones)
