Hand-numbered edition of 500 copies. 'The Soft Room Recordings 1981-1984' charts the evolution of Paul Nagle's home-built electronic compositions over the early '80s. Isolated at his parents farm, the young Nagle kept his mind busy by writing and creating art and music. In 1978 he got his first synthesiser - a Korg Micro-Preset - which he used, together with an organ and a tape delay machine, to make a nascent blend of minimal wave and new age music on tapes which he issued on his own label The Soft Room. The best of these early releases were collected by tape scene lynchpin, David Elliot's YHR label - home to his pre-Pump group MFH and Asmus Tietchens among others - as a compilation of The Soft Room on YHR18 in 1981. Three of its tracks open this LP, giving way to the Schnitzler-esque 'Jacurutu 1', the flighty 'Sequor 2' and proto-trance pulses of 'Universal Indicator' from the 'Alcove' release, and the Kraftwerkian miniature, 'There And Back Again'. Then in 1982, his sound becomes noticeably more layered with 'Ghynna' from 'The Citadel', released on Ian Dobson's Flowmotion label - an offshoot of the early '80s experimental fanzine - and continues to bloom lush with the fragile ecologies of 'J'osui C'rein Reyr' issued in 1983, and especially in this records two latter highlights, the expansive scapes of 'Le Lay' and the enveloping, otherworldly zones of 'Chamber Of Dark Sound', issued in 1985 on 'Music Inspired By Duncton Wood', for his Soft Room label. This is the first time any of these tracks have appeared on vinyl, and neatly fills a small gap in the rich tapestry of early '80s UK synth music.
