Never has there been an artist so aptly named as Dr Rubberfunk. His debut The First Cut is simply astounding: taking us on a magical journey through modern-day mellow soul, funk, jazz and blues.

2001 saw the good Doctor repeatedly rock dance-floors across the UK and receive a great deal of press, club and radio support for the debut Dr. Rubberfunk release Harry The Guitar. This and subsequent releases attracted attention throughout the music industry from the likes of Mr Scruff, Coldcut’s Solid Steel, Groove Armada and David Holmes.

Rubberfunk’s debut long player was well worth the wait, its like listening to a compilation of all the highest calibre chill out artists from the past decade and then some.

The First Cut opens with bass-driven funk of B-Boy B, cosmic drum n’ bass tinged Harry The Guitar and fast paced flamenco delight Latin Player. The latter is a perfect example of the originality this album possesses - complex Latin rhythms fused with traditional dance synths and beats to impressive effects.

The Owner is one of those tracks that stands out within a few listens, although its more a case of slapping you in the face than merely standing out: this track oozes coolness with seductively smooth, soulful vocals set against mellow, funky background. Disco Scene is at the other end of the spectrum being a roller-disco-funk dance-floor classic and is yet another ‘slap you in the face’ kind of track.

Previous single Bossa For The Devil boasts a lifting piano loop, tight bossa groove and juicy jazz-felt vocals with results more refreshing than the morning dew in March. From the chilled yet funky vibes of Hundred & One Keys and Two Fisted Pianistics to the manifestation of Old Skool speed jazz on Step On It, there really is something for everyone here. -- DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD
