Hey there. Glad you dropped by. If you get a chance, have a listen to the MP3's on the "Audio/Video Clips" page of my website.

I've sung in many different venues but “Eight to The Bar” is my first CD release. So by way of introduction, I'm told that I've got a smokey voice with a relaxing style. I can't be objective about that but can say that I look for subtlety, drama and/or the joke in every riff, then inject some of the feeling that flows from experience while seeking out that perfect pitch. That's my goal, anyway.

The artists who have influenced me are varied. Alphabetically speaking, I've loved and absorbed the work of Betty Carter, Sheryl Crow, Blossom Dearie, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, George Gershwin, Billy Holliday, Thelma Houston, Norah Jones, Carmen McRae, Bette Midler, Joni Mitchell, Allanah Myles, Bonnie Rait, Phoebe Snow and a host of others.

I'm not your typical career jazz singer, concentrating solely on jazz from a young age. I've done all sorts of other things while loving music. Born in Toronto, Ontario I remained here and studied film, visual art, dance and theatre at York University. I was a casting agent in television and film, worked in television programming and then went on to the University of Western Ontario to study law. Now I have my own law practice in Toronto (or it has me). A “lawyah” and a “singah”; makes a mommy proud.

Throughout the aforementioned odyssey I studied vocals privately and have sung whenever and wherever possible. Right now I have the absolute privilege to be studying with Elaine Overholt (of “Chicago” fame) who can read a singer's needs in an instant and then bring out the best with tailor made ease.

“Eight to the Bar” is a compendium of happy experiences. It started as a simple demo. I approached my buddy, Michael Maxwell, a composer who produces music with his company, Writers' Productions. Michael then set about writing new charts for the tunes I wished to sing, set me up at one of the best studios in the city, gathered the unbelievable musicians you'll hear on the CD and then produced and mastered it for me. In two days we created something we felt so good about that I decided (with some encouragement) to manufacture it as an independent CD. I also bought Michael some very good Scotch, which was only fair.

There were many Maritime connections involved in creating “Eight to the Bar”. My husband, Freddie Davis, from Saint John, NB introduced me to Michael, also from Saint John. Fred's and my son Sam, a total Maritimer, was my most gentle yet objective critic (being seven years old and all). Fred's brother Rich took about 200 perfect photos for us to choose from and then Michael's friend Bob, from Saint John (surprise!), designed the cover. Joe Guss (Saint John again) gave me 40 title ideas to choose from. One of my best buds Shannon (from Westville, Nova Scotia) did hair, make up and wardrobe.

A special thanks to Marlane Oliver, Shannon Sponagle and Tania Morgado, the most patient and dedicated of cheerleaders. I could go on about the rest of my wonderful family, friends and colleagues who have been so supportive throughout this project...but I've run out of room and you're probably out of patience.

As a final note Freddie says that I must add, “I is a good cook too.......”
There it is. Enjoy the album. ~Barb Gordon
