Katharine Whalen's Jazz Squad: Katharine Whalen (vocals); James Mathus (guitar, banjo); Cecil Johnson (soprano & tenor saxophone); Robert Griffin (piano); Stu Cole (bass); Ted Zarras (drums).

As one of the vocalists for postmodern jazz/swing revivalists the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Katherine Whalen has largely been consigned to sing only a few songs here and there. Stepping out on her own (though with fellow-Zipper James Mathus in tow) on this full-length album, Whalen not only sings all the songs, but she sheds the knowing "nudge-nudge wink-wink" hipster attitude of the Zippers. Instead Whalen concentrates on delivering a genuine, heartfelt jazz album.

The tracks are almost all covers of classics (though not necessarily hits) from the 20's and 30's. The notable exception is the short instrumental "Badisma." The song, written by Mathus, sounds like a Zippers outtake, and is a bit too hyperactive and "modern"-sounding for the rest of the album. Though one or two of the other tracks slide a little close to the cocktail lounge, all show that Whalen's voice is more than expressive and subtle enough to tackle these standards. Standouts include the album opener "Deed I Do," with its warm bassline and sweet (but never cloying) vocals, "Yesterdays," featuring a fairly impressive Billie Holiday croon, and "That Old Feeling," with its flapper-era, up-tempo groove.

Recorded at Overdub Lane, Durham, North Carolina.

Katharine Whalen (vocals); James Mathus & His Knockdown Society (guitar, banjo); Mike Minguez (clarinet); Cecil Johnson (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Je Widenhouse (trumpet); John Kennedy trrombone); Robert Griffin (piano); Ted Zarras (drums).
